Note: This is an approximately 11-month-long AmeriCorps member National Service position; this is *not* regular permanent employment.
Organizational background:
Habitat for Humanity International works in partnership with people everywhere to develop communities with people in need by building simple decent housing. Habitat for Humanity *AmeriCorps* seeks to help in the fight against poverty housing by bringing people together to build those houses, forge relationships, and strengthen communities. **Milwaukee Habitat** builds both homes and hope in the center of a dynamic, bustling city and metro area. We are building and rehabbing over 30 homes in 2010, and completing minor home repairs on approximately 40 more.
Position Start/End Date: September, 2010 - July, 2011
Member Duties : Most AmeriCorps members primarily serve as construction House/Crew Leaders along with crews of volunteers and Habitat homeowners performing residential house construction, rehabilitation or repairs. They also have some additional duties supporting these volunteer shifts. Their typical schedule is Tues. - Sat., 8:00 to 4:00. In addition, one member assists with supporting the Habitat families and coordinating volunteers. This member's typical schedule is Mon. - Fri., 8:00 to 4:00. Having an attitude of service and being motivated are perhaps the most important characteristics for members to bring with them. Construction experience is not required, but would be helpful. In return, these roles provide members with many opportunities to build meaningful relationships with volunteers and homeowners, expand their skill base, and know that they are truly making a difference. Education Requirement: High School Graduate/GED
Compensation: Living allowance of approximately $11,500 for the 2010-2011 service year. Education award of $4725 upon successful completion of the service term. Health insurance. Loan forbearance on most student loans, and accrued interest paid after completion of service term. Childcare reimbursement for qualified members. Optional, convenient housing available for only $100/month per member (or $150/month given for housing assistance). $150 relocation/transition benefits, given at both the beginning and end of service year. $2000/year in extra benefits given to 2nd-year Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps members.
