Local Achievement Awards 2003


Gordy Ziglinski "Spirit of Education" Award

This award recognizes excellence in training and education in the industry in general, and Milwaukee/NARI in particular. This year's recipient grew up in a family business and today works with a number of association members on remodeling projects. He has been instrumental in coordinating the association's education and certification training programs, organizing and moderating the annual Certified Professional Training Program, working on the curriculum with members that he recruits to serve as instructors, monitoring student progress, and serving as the proctor of the annual exam. This Certified Remodeler is also instrumental in developing the floor plan for Milwaukee/NARI's consumer shows, as well as coordinating move-in and tear-down at the Show.

Marvin Johnson Meritorious Service Award

Honors a member who has shown exceptional leadership, devotion, dedication, and accomplishment on NARI's behalf. The 2003 recipient grew up in a family business atmosphere, part of the sixth generation to take up the trade of skilled carpenter. One of the leaders of the family business since 1984, this person has the pleasure of having his three children active in the company. A Certified Remodeler since November 1995, he was appointed Chairman of the Education/ Certification Committee for Milwaukee NARI in August of 1996, a position he held through the end of 2002. This contractor has also been selected by Waukesha County Technical College to serve as the professional liaison for classes relating to home improvement and remodeling, providing guidance and suggestions on course offerings. He is also heavily involved with NARI National, sharing his expertise and insight at regional and national committee meetings and serving as a resource for the national office as it seeks to enhance the educational offerings available to NARI members across the country.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Given to a person who has been in the remodeling industry for at least 20 years and a member of NARI for at least seven years. Through his membership, this individual has served and continues to serve the local chapter as well as the national organization. A past president of the association and a long time board member, he is a tremendous sounding board for members, sharing his many years of home improvement experience for the betterment of the organization.

Government Affairs Award

This person has tirelessly pursued the legislative interests of the building and remodeling industry, using his experience and contacts to make sure the association's needs are well represented locally and throughout the state. He has played a significant role in the association's Government Affairs committee and worked hard to keep members informed as to opportunities available to make their thoughts known to elected officials regarding building code changes and legislation that may affect the industry.

Professionalism Award

This person has shown exceptional leadership, devotion, dedication, and accomplishment through her efforts to promote NARI as a professional organization on the local level. In addition to serving as a board member of the association, she is chair of the Spring Home Improvement Showcase, an event that continues to grow in stature. She also works closely with association members, providing information on the latest trends in the window and door industry.

Certified Professional "Superstar" Awards

These awards recognize individuals who recently showed their commitment to the home improvement and remodeling industry by taking part in the Certified Professionals training program. In addition to these gentleman, 14 others successfully completed the program and passed the certification exams. The award goes to the person scoring highest locally on the written certification exam.

  • Certified Remodeling Specialist "Superstar" Award Don Hinske, Badger Wisconsin Heating Company
  • Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler "Superstar" Award Bob Sebastian, S.J. Janis Company

Certified Professional of the Year

This award recognizes a person who's been a Certified Professional for at least three years and has continued to excel in the field, while sharing professional experience and expertise with other association members. This individual has been a regular participant in the Certified Professional training classes, on the Government Affairs committee, and on the Ethics Committee. A member of the Board of Directors, he is always willing to give his time to speak to high school and technical school students and to answer consumer inquiries for the association's Question and Answer columns.

Distributor of the Year

This honor recognizes a Milwaukee/NARI member company that has demonstrated a strong commitment to NARI, the remodeling industry, and to our community. This company has assisted the association through sponsorship of NARI events and has worked closely with members on providing quality products. Company members are active in chapter committees and regularly attend membership functions.

Peter H. Johnson Image Award

This award recognizes someone who has contributed to the enhancement of the industry's image. The person being honored has played an integral role in assisting consumers, providing ways for them to get the service they deserve. This individual has also been an advocate of Milwaukee/NARI in the reporting done on what consumers should do when involved with a home improvement and remodeling project.

Media Outlet of the Year Award

This award recognizes a media organization that assists Milwaukee/NARI in its effort to provide home improvement and remodeling consultation and resources to consumers throughout the area while enhancing the association's image and presence in the community. This media outlet has been an association partner for more than 40 years, participating in consumer shows, while information on the association and its members is regularly found on its pages.

Affiliate Organization of the Year

This honor is presented to a member company - not directly in the home improvement and remodeling industry - which has assisted the local association in its business activities and enhanced its operations. This year's recipient has worked closely with the association on its insurance needs. In addition, the organization has participated as a sponsor for a number of NARI events, and one of its staff people is an association vice president, as well as chairperson of the Program Committee and a NARI Foundation member.
